One of his friends, a boy called Beaurain, supported him and walked out of school with him. The young Perrault bid his teacher a formal farewell and walked out of school, never to return. Though always top of his class, Perrault’s school career came to a premature end when he quarrelled with his teacher, questioning him on a point of philosophy. At the age of nine, he was sent to a day school, the Collège de Beauvais. Perrault was born in Paris in 1628, the fifth son of Pierre Perrault, a wealthy lawyer. Though he wrote at length about his public life, Perrault was reticent about his personal life, and we know very little about his wife and children. We know about his life mainly through his memoirs, which he wrote for his grandchildren, but which were not published till sixty-six years after his death. Our opening tale, “Piecemeal”, comes from Oscar Cook, who penned “His Beautiful Hands” from the first Pan. although it’s like the front of an Enid Blyton book compared to what would come in later years. Your Yucky Cover: A hand pushing up through the soil of what could well be someone’s garden – but with the added detail of a bloody eyeball clutched in the palm, somewhat squashed like an egg yolk. I don’t hesitate to use the word “classy” regarding a book depicting such frightful and gruesome things there’s enduring work by great writers. Some of the very best horror stories of all time lurk beneath the covers. ![]() It’s a slimmer book than the original, but what it lacks in depth, it more than makes up in quality. The second volume of Herbert van Thal’s fondly-remembered series of shockers was first published in 1960. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a collection of deliciously disturbing and unsettling stories based almost entirely in mundane human circumstances. ![]() Sure, they don’t all do as well as others, but this is probably the most consistent collection of stories I have read all year. I will rate each story, and discuss those that stick out. Of course, I am not going to do that this isn’t high school. Then the content begins to blend together if I don’t stop in between every story. The formatting to discuss each story takes time. Unfortunately, trying to blog about it is hard. At roughly ~300 pages, this isn’t very long nor are many of these stories. This is composed of 26 stories (see table of contents). In any case, I went with this collection instead. I am trying to remember why I had that idea because as I research it, everyone calls it creepy. I also have the impression that it isn’t that scary. I’m also not that excited by We Have Always Lived in the Castle, the book or the movie. ![]() Of course, the Lottery is a commentary on society, and I wanted more of that. It was so well written and charming, but it also felt like a commentary on society intentionally or not. I decided to allow myself to deviate from the plan (oh no!) and read Jackson’s first autobiography, Life Among Savages. ![]() I originally planned to read We Have Always Lived in the Castle, also by Shirley Jackson.
